There’s so much information online, way too much actually. Very quickly you feel overwhelmed by the digital marketing challenges you come across, and what you need to understand and learn.
Anyone can go online and find this definition:
“Digital marketing is an umbrella term for all of your online marketing efforts. Businesses leverage digital channels such as Google search, social media, email, and their websites to connect with their current and prospective customers.”
OK, but now, what do you do with this?
I know it sounds scary, but it isn’t as bad you think.
Like any other aspect of a business, digital marketing is about having a plan and coming up with a strategy.
Most of you have done some marketing or understand what marketing is all about and this is a great start. What you used to do with your collateral, brochure, flyer, etc. you now do it online. Digital marketing is about utilizing digital technology to achieve your marketing objectives.
There is often a misconception that digital marketing is different from marketing. However, both have the same objectives and there is no reason for digital marketing to be separate from the marketing department.
The objective is the same; the technology is different. And that, you have to learn, one day at a time, one platform at a time, or hire someone who knows and can explain it to you.
Earlier, you used to give pictures, content, and information about your company and code colors to a designer to design your company brochure. Now, you brainstorm with your team in the same way, but someone will implement it online.
So before you worry about social media and digital marketing, think about the message and the story you want to share about your brand.
So, as of today, as a fresh start, let’s take one action at a time:
- Identify your audience
- Look at your pictures
- Review your content
You may have certain questions, very precise questions in your mind. Like, what to do, where to start and how to be consistent because consistency is key when it comes to digital marketing.
Remember that you don’t have to be present online everywhere but rather be great somewhere.
My favorite is Instagram. I love pictures and inspirational quotes. I also love motivating people, so this is the best platform for me.
Find the best platform for you and your brand. Find an answer to your questions. Ask someone so you know what the digital experts are talking about during the next digital marketing meeting.
You just need to understand the whole strategy, how everything is integrated.
Remember one thing always, about digital marketing challenges. It is not the end of the world if you don’t understand digital marketing and if you have no interest in it. You don’t have to know it all and master it all. You are certainly great at something else; something that another person knows nothing about.
Understand what it is all about, just to be able to carry a conversation, and let someone else implement it.
It is really that simple.
Digitally yours,
Marie
